Project INFeed (completed)

The use of insects allows to establish a platform technology with which a modular insect-based feeding strategy for animal products (e.g. seafood, poultry, etc.) can be developed. This approach of flexible food production based on biogenic material streams with the use of feeding insects aims at producing high-quality and healthy food locally (urban farming).
The high potential of insect farming in terms of ecology and economy is to be immensely increased by the exclusive use of biogenic residues. For an initial delimitation of the subject area, sustainable aquaculture based on regionally generated material flows is to be established primarily within the framework of this project. In conventional systems, non-species-specific farming and high population densities lead to increased susceptibility to disease, requiring the use of antibiotics and hormones. Recent studies show that insect-based feeds have a positive impact on animal health and can reduce antibiotic use.
To additionally improve the eco-balance, the concept of urban farming is to be further developed. Current aquacultures in urban environments show a comparatively poor eco-balance. A possible solution to this problem are aquaculture units with closed water circulation systems (recirculating aquaculture systems – RAS) in combination with a suitable nutrient recovery concept (bidirectional material flows). In this way, production under low or zero-waste conditions can be realized.
By establishing a scientific foundation for the bioconversion steps, the zero-waste approach is to be raised to a qualitatively new level.
